Who Are We?
St. Photini Orthodox Christian Outreach was formed out of a desire to share an experience of the ancient Christian faith as practiced in the Orthodox Church with the people of Muncie, Indiana and the surrounding area. The closest Orthodox parishes to Muncie range from 50 minutes to well over an hour away, and there are currently no Orthodox parishes in the entire east central part of the state. Our long term goal is to establish a mission and, eventually, a parish in Muncie.
We are currently holding Vespers (evening prayer) services on the first and third Mondays of every month at 6 p.m., followed by conversation and a meal or snacks. Services currently take place in the basement of Urban Light Community Church, 1400 S. Madison St. in Muncie and are usually led by Fr. Joel Weir, the priest of St. Stephen the First Martyr Orthodox Church in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
The concept of sacred space is a significant aspect of Orthodox Christian worship, and our current location has permitted us to set up a small chapel with icons and candle stands. However, we are also actively seeking a location which will provide us with greater visibility and closer proximity to Ball State University, the 3rd largest residential campus in the state of Indiana with over 19k students from around the world (https://www.bsu.edu/about/administrativeoffices/oirds/).
Whether you are currently an Orthodox Christian, curious about Orthodox Christianity (see our “What is Orthodoxy?” page), or just want to explore something new, all are welcome to worship with us. Come and see!
